II. Economic History of the Beauty Industry
The first attempt to modernize and commercialize the beauty industry started in France more than 100 years ago. A French chemist named Eugene Schueller, who later founded L’Oreal, developed a hair dye that ended up making red a very fashionable color for women’s hair. He founded the company called L’Oreal in 1907 when he decided to start a company that would sell shampoos, hair dyes and other products for the beauty industry; it’s currently one of the biggest beauty companies on earth.
In addition, France was also responsible for many important developments in cosmetic technology that later became very popular around the world. Women’s cosmetics first began at this time because French women wanted to make themselves look more glamorous. In fact, most of the foundations used by women today were originally developed by French chemists.
Lipstick is another product which originated in France as well. It was invented by Francois Coty who is best known as being the founder of Parfums Caron; however, he has also been called an artisan of perfumes, and a “crafter of fragrances”. Coty revolutionized the cosmetics industry by coming up with lipsticks. He once said:
“Lips are the gates to the face, which must be beautiful.”
In his pursuit for beauty, he developed many different types of perfumes including those that were suitable for both men and women. In 1990, in an interview with The New York Times , he was quoted as saying:
“My goal is perfect beauty–to make people more beautiful by a sense of smell…It’s like creating dreams around you.”Coty also claimed that: “Perfume should have some mystery about it.”
III. How is the beauty industry evolving today?
The beauty industry is evolving to be more into the category of sustainability. Consumers are now more interested in how an item affects their environment and less interested in how it will make them look. They are thinking about the health of their skin, hair, and nails. In recent years, there’s been a rise interest in natural cosmetics which have been on the market for some time but were not always sought out by consumers. For example, this company has created all-natural products that include shampoos made from green tea and conditioners made from pine tree sap.
In recent years, brands like Honest also have become popular among consumers who want to purchase more sustainable products for themselves such as these biodegradable tampons that are made only with organic cotton. This is causing beauty companies to change their packaging to be more environmentally friendly and consumers are demanding that they do this as well because they want to make sure that the products they use aren’t going to harm the environment in any way.
In addition, cosmetic surgery is one of the fastest growing sectors of the beauty industry today. Women who are unsatisfied with their body image may turn to plastic surgery for a quick fix; however, many people would benefit from learning some better dieting habits or engaging in an exercise routine instead of resorting to having something permanently altered about themselves without trying other methods first.
In conclusion, the beauty industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. They have evolved from being a small French-based business into being one of the biggest industries on earth. They are led by companies like L’Oreal who have always been striving for perfect “beauty”, and their efforts certainly show.
